Golden Valley Christian Church

The name Daniel Webster Whittle is not a name that many of us recognize immediately.  When the Civil War broke out, Daniel enlisted in the 72nd Illinois Infantry.  He arose in the ranks to become a major in Company B.  Daniel and his fellow comrades were in the bloodiest battle in this nation’s history—the Battle of Vicksburg.  He was badly injured, losing his right arm, and was captured by the Confederate soldiers.  As a POW, Major Whittle started reading the New Testament.  While beside a dying young POW, Daniel gave his life to God.  A few years after the war’s end, Daniel was drawn into the ministry and started writing gospel song lyrics.  A few of these songs are “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing” (Ezk 34:26), “The Banner of the Cross” (Ps 60:4), and “I Know Whom I Have Believed” (2 Tim 1:12).

Thanks go to all who helped last Saturday, repainting the parking lot lines and ramps, and taking care of other needs around the church building.  Thanks, also, to the ladies that set out the annual flowers.  A church building needs upkeep, just like a home.  GVCC is in a residential area, and we do our best to be good neighbors.  During our morning service we were blessed with a beautiful special, “There's Room at The Cross for You," sung by Frances Burris.  After the morning service, a carry-in-meal was enjoyed by many of the congregation.

"A Caring Church” was the title of Bro Tim’s message, with scripture from Mt 25:31-40. The early church was a good example for all Christians.  They voluntarily gave to those in need, realizing what God had done for them, and they wanted to give back to others in need. The church’s first priority is to spread the good news of Jesus, and secondly, help others in need.
