Golden Valley Christian Church
All of us have told “little white lies.” There is a story of a new mother, taking her baby to the doctor. The doctor exclaimed what a pretty baby she had. The mother retorted, “I bet you tell that to all mothers.” “No,” the doctor said, “only the ones that are pretty. I tell the rest that the baby looks just like the mother.” Amusing, but not quite the truth. The Bible records numerous liars. Jacob, lying to his father to receive the blessing (Gen 27:19); Sarah, lying to God about laughing at the thought of having a baby (Gen 18:13-15); Sapphira and Ananias, lying about the sale of property (Acts 5:1-10), to mention just a few. There are seven things detestable to God, and lying is the second one listed (Proverbs 6:16-19 and Psalm 120:2). There are many places in the Bible that condemn lying. Shouldn’t we take that seriously?
We need to keep the Hurricane Harvey victims and workers in our prayers. The GVCC congregation is taking an offering next Sunday for the flood victims, which will be sent to International Disaster Emergency Service, a Christian Church organization that works directly with partner churches in the affected area to help those in need. Back-to-Church Sunday is September 17th, so bring someone to church with you!
Bro. Tim’s message, taken from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, entitled “We Need Friends,” looked at the needs and relationships between people. We will probably have many acquaintances in our lifetime, but very few true friends. Bro. Tim related the story of the baseball player, Jackie Robinson, receiving jeers and boos from the crowd until a fellow player, Pee Wee Reese, put his arm around Robinson, and the spectators quieted. Friends will encourage and build you up. Jesus is the perfect example of a true friend. When all others fail you, He will still be there.
The Bible challenge question: What caused the death of King Herod? (Acts 12:21-23)
