Golden Valley Christian Church

Missouri has a number of strange-sounding, or weird, names for villages across the state, such as the unincorporated village of Rat, located in Shannon County.  There is also Enough, located in Iron County, or the town of Braggadocio, located in the Missouri Bootheel.  Some of these towns are no longer on our maps.  Henry County has Tightwad, which makes all of the lists of strange town names. There are also towns that have taken their names from the Bible, e.g. Bethany, in Harrison County; Bethel, in Shelby County; Lebanon, in Laclede County; Palmyra in Marion County.  Some of the Biblical names strange, for example, Dodo, a man in the Old Testament (Judges 10:1).

Thanks to all that made our Back-to-Church Sunday such a special day.  Though we did not make our goal in attendance for the special that Bro Tim had promised, he did read a poem, “The Old Violin (The Touch of the Master’s Hand).”  He also showed us his own violin; maybe he will play for us another day.  Thanks to all who brought food and helped with our carry-in lunch.  As usual, it was a delicious meal.  Sunday, the 23rd, at 5:45 PM, our youth group program will resume, and at 6 PM, the same night, the adult study of the book of Jeremiah will begin.  September 25th and 26th will begin our home studies on the book of James.

Bro Tim’s message, “Why Jesus?,” was taken from Col 1:15-23.  These few verses tell us more about who Jesus was.  We know Jesus is the image of God, that He actually was God, in flesh, on earth.  We learn from these verses that Jesus created the things in heaven and earth.  The Apostle John tells us the same thing in John 1:3. For us, the blessing is that we are reconciled with God through Jesus, by His death and resurrection.

The Bible challenge question:  Under what king did some of the Jewish exiles return to Jerusalem? (Ezra 1:2-4)
