Of all the world’s languages, English is one of the most difficult to learn.  This is due to the many different facets and rules.  English sounds (phonemes) are difficult as to how a word is spelled, compared to how it is spoken, e.g., how the “a” is pronounced in cat, late, and wasp.  Homonyms are words that are spelled differently, with a different meaning, but pronounced the same, e.g., to, two, and too.  Even in past tense, there are weird rules.  Past tense for teach is taught, while past tense for preach is preached.  These types of rules make it difficult for any beginner to learn.  There are also words so nearly alike, they can be confusing.  A story is brought to mind of a mother who was helping her young son to spell two words, conscious and conscience.  Asking her son if he knew the meaning of the two words, he said, “Sure.  Conscious is when you are aware of something, and conscience is when you wish you weren’t.”  This may bring a smile, but remember that God gave us all a conscience.  Listen to it, and you may avoid some pitfalls (1 Timothy 1:18-19 NIV)

We are officially in the very middle of summer.  Some in our church family are on vacations, with a few others being stricken with COVID.  Our prayers go forth to those traveling and those suffering from illness.  School will be starting soon, and our evening youth group will once again start meeting in September.

Due to our minister’s family being hit with COVID, Bro James was unable to be with us again last Sunday.  Ken Jones graciously filled the pulpit for us with a message from 1 Peter 1:3-9.  These few passages are filled with encouragement and wisdom.  We can have grace and peace, with a new inheritance in heaven that is protected for us by God, through our faith.  Peter tells us that our faith is of greater worth than gold.  We may suffer grief and trials, but this will prove our faithfulness.  Through our belief, we will receive the goal, which is our salvation.

Golden Valley Christian Church meets at 611 South Third Street in Clinton.  Sunday School classes begin at 9:30 AM, and the morning worship service is at 10:30.  Our Wednesday evening Bible study is suspended for the summer.  Our minister is James McFarland (office phone # 660-890-0252), and our website is www.goldenvalleycc.org, where you will also find a link to access our Facebook page.  We are happy to invite you to attend our services, where you will always receive a warm welcome.
