This is the time of year we enjoy our garden produce, especially a nice red tomato. However, the tomato has had a turbulent existence as a food. Early settlers even thought the tomato to be poisonous. But to cap the story of the tomato, is when the Supreme Court became involved. In the 19th century, the Port Authority of New York had a tax imposed on vegetables, but not on fruit. Importers called the tomato a fruit to avoid the tax; thus, the case came before the Supreme Court. There were arguments on both sides of this conflict. The verdict of the court was that the tomato was a vegetable, because it was not used as a dessert. We know today, science calls tomato a fruit. Jesus told a parable about a judge that had a hard time declaring justice. (Luke 18:1-4)
Time seems to fly, with it already being the middle of the month, and school starting. Our Sunday night youth group will resume in mid-September. The prayer list of the GVCC grows and grows, reminding us to keep our prayer life active. We welcomed Bro Tim back, as he was at the Unionville Christian Church last Sunday for their 150-year reunion. Tim’s father had preached there when Bro Tim was growing up.
The title of Bro Tim’s message was “3 R’s,” with scripture from the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians. Jesus told His Disciples of His impending death and resurrection. There were some who did not believe in the resurrection. There were numerous stories in that time period, countering the truth of Jesus’ resurrection. We live in a chaotic world today, but there is still hope in the resurrection of Jesus. As Christians, we have faith in our Lord Jesus, and believe we will live with Him some day.
The Bible challenge question: Why did God forbid King David from building the Temple? (I Chron 28:2-3)
