Step outside your air-conditioned house or place of work, and you know it is hot. July and August tie for the hottest months, although most people think August is the hotter of the two. Despite the heat, many events took place in July. The month of July is named for Julius Caesar, who was born in this month in 100 B.C. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on July 4, 1826, just a few hours apart. On a lighter note, the United States Post Office, with Benjamin Franklin as the first U.S. Postmaster, was created in July. The Bible tells us of another type of hot which is better than cold, and much better than lukewarm, when it involves the deeds we do to please God and Jesus, helping to determine where we will spend eternity. (Rev 3:15-16)
The GVCC Crafters meet every Thursday at 5:30 PM. The shawls this group makes have been given to a number of people with health problems. The group is open to all who would enjoy this work and the fellowship that goes with it. If you enjoy baseball, a group from GVCC will be going to a game in Springfield on July 27th.
Last Sunday, GVCC hosted some students from Central Christian College of the Bible, in Moberly, Missouri. CCCB is one of the missions GVCC supports. Kevin Brown, Director of Donor Relations, gave an informative update on the progress of the college. Jacob Case, a sophomore at CCCB, brought the message. Using a number of visuals, Jacob captivated the congregation. His message was clear and concise, challenging Christians to follow Jesus’ example, not only when in church, but when we leave the building. Focusing on the word “Ichabod,” which means “God has left us,” he gave examples of how that can happen. (Judges 16:20 and Deut 1:42)
The Bible challenge question: What were the cities of refuge? (Joshua 20:1-3)
