Golden Valley Christian Church

Some things in life that seem unbelievable can actually be true.  In 1942, Calvin Graham, a 12-year-old boy, lied to enlist in the U.S. Navy.  He served on the USS South Dakota in the Battle of Guadalcanal. During the battle, he was struck in the jaw and mouth by shrapnel.  Despite his injuries, Calvin helped other crew members to safety.  The next year, when his true age was discovered by the Navy, he was given a dishonorable discharge and stripped of his Purple Heart and Bronze Star.  Years later, with the help of powerful lawmakers, he was able to receive an honorable discharge and reinstatement of his other decorations.  The Bible tells of another 12-year-old boy that was in the temple court, sitting among teachers, amazing them with His understanding and answers to questions (Luke 2:46-47).  There are other instances in the Bible involving young people as heroes (e.g. I Sam 17:40-44).

God gave us a wonderful Sunday morning, with beautiful weather and a building filled with faithful Christians.  We were indeed blessed.  Thanks to Georgia Randall and Rosanna Cross for filling in as song leader and pianist.

Our combined adult Bible School class is going through a study of “What We Believe.”  Austin Jones taught this week’s study, “The Restoration Movement.”  In our morning worship service, Bro Tim continued this topic, “The Church Through the Years,” using the book of Acts as the scripture reference. Bro Tim refreshed us on the history of the church through the ages--how the different denominations developed, how the Emperor Constantine made it the Roman government state religion, and the protestant revolution.  He then concentrated on the Restoration Movement, which the Golden Valley Christian Church is a part of.  This movement started during the pioneer days of the United States and spread across the country.  The goal of the movement was to eliminate man-made ideas and return to the Church of the New Testament.  We do not claim to be the only Christians, but we are Christians only.  (I Peter 4:16)

The Bible challenge question:  Where was the name “Christians” first used in the Bible? (Acts 11:26)
