Golden Valley Christian Church
The Golden Valley Christian Church owes its existence to a movement, during the frontier days of the United States, known as the Restoration Movement. Starting in the early 19th century, the purpose of the movement was to restore the church back to the basic principles of the Biblical New Testament Church. One of the more colorful leaders was a man, Raccoon John Smith, so called because he said he lived in an area so remote that his only neighbors were raccoons. Although he had only a few months of formal schooling, he loved to pester his teacher. A story was told that on one occasion, his teacher, known to indulge too much in alcoholic beverage, fell asleep. John took a small scoop of live coals from the fire and slipped them into the sleeping teacher’s pocket. His classmates, seeing this, left the building. The teacher finally awakened when the smoldering coals produced smoke. Fortunately, no one was injured. No person worked harder than Raccoon John Smith to advance God’s directive. (Psalm 40:8)
Ladies of the young adult class hosted a baby shower for Abby Rush last Sunday afternoon, where Abby received many useful gifts, while also “catching up” with old friends. Chris and Abby were faithful members of GVCC before moving closer to the city last year.
Colossians 2:6-15 was the scripture used in Bro Tim’s message. Questions Bro Tim asked were, “Do we have a calling, and who is in charge of our life?” Christ died for us, but He was raised from the dead to die no more. When a person accepts Jesus and is baptized, he/she dies to their old self, and is raised a new creature in Him. The Old Testament laws could not save us, so it took Jesus’ dying on the cross, for us to have everlasting life.
The Bible challenge question: Who actually cut Samson’s hair? (Judges 16:19)
