Golden Valley Christian Church
There is a very familiar hymn that was written by a Missourian. One of the founders of Park University, in Parkville, Missouri, was a man named John A. McAfee. One of John's sons, Cleland McAfee, became a preacher and director of the college choir. When Cleland's two little nieces died within a twenty-four hour period from diphtheria, the whole town was grief stricken. Cleland wrote words and music to a hymn, taught it to the choir, who then went to the home of his brother, singing that hymn in the dark of the night. The name of the hymn . . . "Near to the Heart of God."
Last Sunday, we welcomed Tom Worstell and his wife, representing West Central Christian Service Camp at LaMonte. Tom shared a short presentation about the camp.
Bro. Tim's message pointed out that God has a hand in human events. The book of Esther illustrates this truth. Although God's name is never mentioned in this narrative, the implication of His presence is strong. There is little doubt that God helped Esther, who was a Jew, to become the queen of Persia. This is the story of a devout woman, following the wisdom of her older cousin, Mordecai, in saving her people from death. The evil Haman ended up reaping the terrible fate, himself, that he had planned for Mordecai and the Jewish people. Esther is another personality from the Bible that shows personal courage and faith, and a wonderful example for all of us.
The Bible challenge question is: "What does the word "sabachthani" mean, and who said it?'" (Matthew 27:46)
