Although we are in the grip of winter, Major League Baseball training will soon be in full swing.  Looking at these young, tough players, we do not think of them being close to God, but we could be very wrong.  One example is Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the highest paid players in baseball.  He has won every major baseball award, including “Most Valuable Player.”  Kershaw started a charity, Kershaw’s Challenge, an ongoing mission work for children in Los Angeles, Dallas, Zambia, and the Dominican Republic.  Kershaw said it was only when he gave his life completely to God, did his life turn around for the better.  In summarizing his life, he said, “It’s the legacy I leave off the field that counts.”  (Matt 6:20-21)

Last Sunday, we celebrated the last Sunday of our tenth-anniversary month.  Atticus Jones and Anna Tucker talked about what GVCC means to them.  One of the things Atticus said was how GVCC loves to serve others; for a very young man, this was a meaningful observation.  Anna’s observation, among other recollections, was of the love and friendliness her family felt when first attending GVCC.  It was very obvious these two speakers are devoted followers of Jesus Christ.  Each week of our celebration, trivia questions were asked about the early days of GVCC.  The correct answers, along with the name, were put in a basket, and on this last Sunday, a drawing was held; Jo Ann Fenwick’s name was drawn, and she was the recipient of a gift card.

Bro Tim reminded us that we are the salt of the earth, in his message, “A Bright Future,” with scripture from Matt 5:13-16. Referring to His followers, Jesus said we are the “salt of the earth.”  Salt is an important mineral today and was especially so during Biblical days.  Jesus also said His followers are the “light of the world.”  Satan hates the light, so it is vital that our light is never hidden.  It is through the good deeds of Christians that others can see the good works of Jesus.
