Did you ever give it a thought as to how the months on our calendar were named?  There have been two calendar periods in the western world history.  In Ancient Rome, the first day of the new year was in March, named after the Roman god of war, Mars.  In 1582, Pope Gregory adjusted the calendar, which is known as the Gregorian calendar, and this is the one we use today.  Many of the months were named after the Roman gods:  January for Janus, the god of beginnings and endings; May for Mai, an earth goddess of growing; June for Juno, queen of the gods; and July was named for Julius Caesar. Even though our calendar months are named for non-existing gods, we must always remember our one and only true God, the three-in-one—Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matt 28:19-20).  We must not forget Him.

We found out last Sunday that it can get plenty cold in Clinton, Missouri.  Despite the cold weather, GVCC was blessed with the presence of so many that braved the frigid weather to be in church, including Mary Tuggle and Alexander Jones, who completed the year of 2017 with perfect attendance.  Bob Fenwick sang a beautiful song, “Until Then.”  Sunday night was full of food and fun for everyone who came to the New Year’s Eve party, even though we didn’t quite make it to midnight!

Building Christ’s Church, with scripture from Col 1:24-29, was the focus of Bro Tim’s message. The Day of Pentecost was the beginning of the church, which continues to this day.  The church is a body of believers, not a physical structure.  It was through evangelism that the church grew.  The apostles and Paul are examples of people spreading the gospel.  It is not just our missionaries that are to continue this work.  Each one of God’s people should continue this work in our daily lives.

The Bible challenge question:  How did Paul cause a dispute when he was called before the Sanhedrin? (Acts 23:6-8)
