Golden Valley Christian Church

By the feel of the temperature the last few weeks, we might think winter is already here, which is not true.  The winter solstice, the actual day with the shortest time between sunrise and sunset, will be December 21st.  This actually happens at a specific day and time, and regardless of where you live, you will witness it.  In parts of northern Europe, the winter solstice is called Yule.  In Scandinavian countries, where the daylight is really short, some Scandinavian and Germanic pagans burnt yule logs as a symbol of welcoming back the light.  There are many folklore tales told about this time of the year, and some of our Christmas traditions, like the yule log, are related to these tales.

This is truly a busy time of the year, and by the beautiful decorations in the church buildings, we know Christmas is on the way.  Thanks to those who worked so hard to make our building so festive and pretty.  Our Sunday evening Bible Study will be cancelled this coming Sunday, Dec. 9th, for our Christmas caroling and soup/chili supper.  We had a great attendance last year, so will hopefully have many this year, too.

A couple Sundays ago, we were blessed with a piano duet by grandmother and granddaughter, Marla and Abrielle Jones.  It is such a pleasure to have our young people use their talent for the congregation.  This past Sunday, all of our young people presented their annual Christmas performance, called “The Fumbly Bumbly Angels.”  This was an absolutely delightful little play, and the children were fully into their parts.  Under the direction of Melynne Jones, the youngsters brought a wonderful message and entertainment at the same time.  It takes a great deal of effort for both director and performers to have such a nice program.  Our sincere “thanks” go to Melynne and the church youth.  We know Jesus loves children. (Luke 18:15-17)

The Bible challenge question:  Who broke the wooden yoke Jeremiah wore around his neck? (Jeremiah 28:10)
