Golden Valley Christian Church
When we think of the first Thanksgiving, we think of the early settlers and their Indian neighbors enjoying a meal together, giving thanks for the bountiful harvest. The pilgrims had settled on land that belonged to the Patuxet, a band of the Wampanoag Indian Tribe. Tisquantum, known as Squanto, a member of this band, was an invaluable asset to the early European settlers. As a young man, Squanto had been captured by British explorers and taken to Britain, where he learned the English language. It is thought that he returned to America with John Smith, and became an interpreter between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Tribe. Much credit must be given to this young Native American man for helping the Pilgrims establish a new home in America.
Last Sunday, GVCC enjoyed their annual holiday meal. After the meal, the yearly congregational meeting was held; Mark Radtke was elected to be installed as one of GVCC’s deacons. Bro Tim’s 3rd & 4th grade Sunday School class memorized all the books in the New Testament, so they recited them for us during our morning worship service. Marla Jones was given a card and gift as a token of the church’s appreciation for being our faithful pianist for the past nine years; Judy Harris made this presentation.
Bro Tim’s message started with a question: “What are you thankful for?” Many responses were given. Then he asked, “Do we give God the credit for what He has provided for us?” (2 Peter 1:1-4) God keeps the promises He makes to us. However, being a Christian does not keep us from having problems in our lives. Jesus is our example, and He encountered many woes in His life. We are adopted by God, and we will be His heirs. We must use Jesus as our example for obeying God. (1 John 2:3-6)
The Bible challenge question: How did Elisha purify the water of an unhealthy spring near Jericho? (2 Kings 2:19-22)
