Golden Valley Christian Church

Our mid-week Bible Study group is studying the book of James. James is a fascinating and down-to-earth book. Our belief is that James is the half-brother of Jesus. He did not become a Christian until after the resurrection of Jesus. He then became a devout believer and leader in the Christian world. His letters are of the very practical side of Christianity. While works alone will not save us, our faith should lead us to do good works and deeds. Two of James’ comments could help all of us to have a better life, if obeyed. The first is the control of the tongue (James 3:3-8). So many bitter and sad things could be avoided if the tongue was stopped from saying hurtful things. The second admonition is to not judge others. It is not our job to judge; that job belongs to Jesus, or as James says, “. . . only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy . . .” (James 4:11-12).

Due to the wet, chilly night, the annual wiener roast, hosted by the Randalls, was held at the church building last Sunday night. An added attraction to the wiener roast was fried fish, thanks to Bill Keith who caught it, and to Ed Seidel who helped Bill fry it. Despite the miserable weather, a large number of people came to enjoy this sumptuous meal and great fellowship. The photos of this fun event are on the Golden Valley Church Facebook page. Georgia Randall blessed us in our morning worship with the song, “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.” We thank all of the people who share their particular talents with us and give the glory to God.

continuation of studying the book of James, Bro Tim’s message was taken from the fourth chapter, entitled “Submit Yourself to God.” James tells us we should be humble (James 4:10). Pride keeps us from that characteristic. conflicts with others, we think we are always right, and the other person is always wrong. God knows what is best for us and we should rely on Him. We should not be slandering or judging people. There are times when we deliberately sin by not doing the good we should (James 4:17).
