When we become set in our ways, it is very difficult to change to something new.  The truth is, change is a constant, for better or for worse.  An example of this was felt by Edward Jenner, an English physician.  Smallpox had been a scourge of mankind since prehistoric times.  Jenner observed that people who had cowpox seemed immune to smallpox, and in 1796, after much research, Jenner inoculated a young boy with cowpox and later with smallpox.  The boy proved immune to smallpox, but Jenner met violent opposition to this theory.  This being the first vaccine, and coming from an animal, led some people to think it could even cause horns on newborn babies.  His perseverance led to a vaccine that saved multiple lives.  The Apostle Paul encouraged all Christians to persevere in the faith, sharing the good news of Jesus, with the goal of saving multiple lives.  (James 1:12)

Open to all, our weekly Bible study continues on Wednesday evenings, at 7:00 PM.  Additionally, a new women’s Bible study will begin Tuesday, October 18, 6:00 PM, at GVCC.  Let Amy know if you plan to attend; all ladies are invited and welcome.  The Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes will be packed on November 13, so we have one more month to collect small items for the boxes.

Bro James’ message dealt with one of Jesus’ miracles, healing a blind man, as told in John 9:1-7.  Jesus and His disciples saw a blind man, and His disciples asked Jesus who had sinned, his parents or the man.  People in Jesus’ day believed that sin was the cause of infirmities and diseases.  Jesus quickly dismissed this notion, telling the disciple the man was blind “so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3 NIV).  Jesus made mud with dirt and His saliva, put it on the man’s eyes, and told him to wash it off in the pool of Siloam.  The man’s sight was restored.  Jesus did these miracles to prove His deity.  Even today, people seem to want proof of who Jesus was.
