Weather is normally a safe topic when people start a conversation, and this topic has been on people’s minds for a number of days.  We are now in mid-summer, when the heat bears down in full force.  As hot as it has been, we still have not experienced the heat of the year 1954.  According to the University of Missouri’s “Missouri Climate Center,” the record high in this state was on July 14, 1954, at 118 degrees.  That almost makes these last few weeks seem cool!  Weather played a role in Biblical days as well.  It was because of a drought, unable to grow grain, that the children of Israel ended up in Egypt (Gen 45:9-12).  A major drought was broken by prayers from the prophet Elijah (I Kings 18:41-45).

The congregation happily welcomed back Bro. Tim and Georgia from their vacation.  Bro. Tim’s message came from the book of Esther, entitled “Making Choices.”  There are two courageous queens in this book:  Queen Vashi, for refusing to make a spectacle of herself in front of the drunken king’s friends, and Queen Esther, who put her own life on the line to save her people.  The villain in this book is Haman, who hated all Jews and plotted to have them killed.  In the end, Haman is put on the gallows that he had built to hang Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and benefactor (Esther 7:9-10).  There is one strange detail about the book of Esther--God’s name is never mentioned throughout the book.

The Bible challenge question:  Who did God order the prophet Hosea to marry? (Hosea 1:2-3)
