John Newton, born in 1725, was a rebellious and sinful man in his youth.  Losing his mother at age 7, John was raised by his father, a stern sea captain.  He was placed in the British navy where he received many lashes for trying to desert.  He ended up in the terrible sale of humans, making three trips as the captain of a slave ship.  At one time, he was in a horrendous storm with the ship about to sink; John prayed, and his life slowly turned around.  Even though still in the slave business, he started reading the Bible, and the words slowly made an impact on his life.  In later life, he was ordained as an Anglican priest.  It was John Newton that penned the words to one of the most loved and enduring hymns, “Amazing Grace.”  (Ephesians 2:4-9)

Last Sunday, we were blessed again by Bob Fenwick, with a beautiful solo, “I Still Serve an Amazing God.” These specials all have a wonderful message.  Mary Radtke showed the congregation some of the crocheted articles the GVCC Charity Crafters have made.  These items were passed through the congregation, with prayers for the individuals who have been chosen to receive them.  After the morning service, we enjoyed a tasty carry-in meal, and we wished Murray and Tracey Gilbert well, as they prepare to move from this area; both will be missed!  Some upcoming events include a GVCC revival meeting scheduled for March 11-13 and a Baby Sunday to honor our recent babies and parents. The Truth Project Bible study is at 7:00 PM on Wednesday nights, and the GVCC Charity Crafters meet on Thursdays at 5:30 PM.

Bro Tim’s message was “Created to Create,” with scripture from Ex 20:9-11.  Sometimes work is looked on as a negative word, but if we are to provide for the necessities of life, we must work.  We are reminded that all on this earth belongs to God, and He gives us the ability to use it (2 Thessalonians 3:10), but we cannot focus on God and money at the same time.  To illustrate this, Bro Tim asked us to look at a Bible on one side of the room, and then said to look at some paper money on the other side of the room; then he challenged us to look at them both at the same time.  It is impossible to focus our attention on God, if we are focusing our attention on wealth.

The Bible challenge question:  What two idols did Rehoboam make, and where did he place them? (1 Kings 12:28-30)
