The sorrowful sound called “Taps” (Day is Done) is played by a bugle at military funerals.  This song dates back to the Civil War, replacing the three drum taps that told the soldiers it was time to “put out the lights.”  It was in this period, also, that the song was played at the gravesite of the fallen soldier.  One of the amazing things about this song is that only four different musical pitches are used, and only twenty-four notes are used in the entire song.  A last line is, “All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.”  This is a comforting thought for any soldier far from home, being reminded in song that “God is nigh,” and should be a comforting thought for all of us (Psalm 145:18).

Although last Sunday was a rainy day, it was great that such a large number of our faithful made their way to church.  We, like many other churches, have been plagued with illness and bad weather that has made it difficult for some to attend.  We all appreciated Sharon Seidel’s a cappella rendition of “Because He Lives.”  We have been blessed with so many willing to share their talents.

Bro Tim’s message was entitled “Being Effective,” with scripture from Matthew 5:13-16.  Jesus calls His people to be the salt and light of the world.  Too many Christians simply blend in with the world instead of being “set apart.”  Our love for Christ should compel us to go to those who have not felt the love of our Savior.  Christians should especially enjoy this life on earth because of what Jesus has done for us and the promise He has given us of eternal life.

The Bible challenge question:  What caused ten of the Apostles to be indignant with James and John? (Mark 10:35-41)
